5 Ways to Show Customer Appreciation

In order to run a successful small business, you must strive to attract new customers while continuously acknowledging your existing ones. By making a conscious effort to recognize your loyal customers, you can help your business stand out. Here are five creative ways to show customer appreciation.

1. Get personal

Personalizing your offers is a great way to show that you are in touch with your customers' preferences. Perhaps you can send a survey out to existing customers to learn more about their experiences with your business or launch an email campaign that triggers personalized messages based on behaviors. You can also look into past purchase habits and patterns for each customer, or simply strike up a friendly, in-person conversation with customers who are in your store or office. You can then use this information to offer your customers personalized deals, allowing you to ensure that you are meeting their individual needs.

2. Reward Customer Loyalty

Every customer loves a good giveaway. Some companies run recurring contests or simply offer discounts to customers who meet a certain criterion. For example, this could consist of a "Freebie Friday" tradition in which one lucky customer wins a store item simply for interacting with your brand on social media. You may also target loyal customers who have been with you for a specific time period, with no further action required on their end. All in all, these types of perks allow you to thank your customers for their continued business in a fun, creative way.

3. Host a special event

If your small business has a brick and mortar location, you may want to host a customer appreciation event. Perhaps you can throw a small holiday celebration or host a special event to celebrate a new product launch.

During the planning stage, you should inform everyone in advance by word of mouth, via social media, or through a newsletter campaign. These events do not have to take place frequently, but folding them into your yearly plan can benefit you and your customers alike.

4. Write thank-you notes

Though old-fashioned by today's standards, a handwritten thank-you note still goes a long way. Oftentimes, physical greeting cards hold more intrinsic value than their digital counterparts, and the same can be said about a heartfelt thank-you letter.

Personalize every handwritten note and mention something unique to that customer. This may consist of a recent purchase or the exact date the customer joined your services. If you are unable to perform this task for your entire customer base, you can simply pick out a few of your most loyal customers.

5. Go above and beyond

There are a variety of ways you can take customer appreciation to a whole new level. As Mashable reports, longtime Samsung customer Shane Bennett makes for an ideal example. He messaged Samsung on Facebook to ask for a free Samsung Galaxy S III. The post, which included the customer's illustration of a dragon, garnered press for Samsung. To Bennett's surprise, the tech giant seized the opportunity by delivering a free, customized phone that displayed his dragon drawing. The gesture quickly went viral. Though you certainly do not have to go to these extremes, you can always make more of an effort to engage with your customers through social media on a regular basis. By interacting with your customers on these platforms, you can show them that you are actively listening to what they have to say.
