How to Fight End-of-Year Fatigue

After a long year of running your day-to-day operations, you may be in need of a break. Unfortunately, the end of the year is notoriously hectic among businesses due to holiday purchases and preparations. Here are some tips on how to fight end-of-year fatigue as a small business owner.

Plan ahead

Employers typically revamp their businesses during special occasions such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. To avoid last-minute hassles and potential blunders, you should start making note of everything you wish to implement several weeks—or even months—in advance. Some small businesses routinely run out of inventory depending on the occasion. In an effort to prevent needless frustration down the line, you should try to make all of the necessary preparations ahead of time.

Switch things up

As the Huffington Post reports, the darker, colder months at the end of the year often cause people to feel increasingly tired on a regular basis. If you find yourself affected by this phenomenon, you can change your office environment to help improve your mood and suit your needs. This process may include adding lighting or new paint, playing background music, or moving your desk closer to the window to take advantage of natural light. Your employees will appreciate a fresh and dynamic new setting.

Consider outsourcing

During the busy holiday season, your entire team may be strapped for time. To make matters more complicated, the additional projects that you take on during this time period may require skill sets that your staff members do not currently possess. During times like these, you may want to consider outsourcing additional, temporary assistance. Perhaps you can find a copywriter to compose materials concerning end-of-year deals. Or maybe you can hire an assistant to manage incoming calls and e-mails. Due to the temporary nature of these rolls, you do not have to worry about filling out all of the paperwork that is involved with hiring new employees.

Stay positive

The end of the year can be a stressful time for everyone. One way to combat end-of-year fatigue is to make an effort to keep a cool head in work situations that might make you feel anxious or overwhelmed. Try to focus on the positive achievements you have accomplished and any exciting goals that you have set for the foreseeable future.

Acknowledge everything you have done successfully and thank your employees for being integral to your ongoing success. Likewise, remember to extend gratitude to your customers for their business. These types of actions will help you to maintain a positive atmosphere through an otherwise stressful period.

Set realistic expectations

You may be inclined to set somewhat daunting expectations as a means of standing out among your competitors. While this gesture is admirable, it is important for you to avoid setting unrealistic expectations that you lack the resources to manage. Remember that big deals will attract more sales, but will also add stress along the way.

Prioritize your mental and physical health

A fresh mind works wonders against fatigue and promotes better performance on a daily basis. As the Association for Psychological Science reports, a study conducted by Stockholm University and the Karolinska Institute found that workers need to get a healthy amount of sleep in order to maintain a positive attitude and manage stressful situations. Likewise, it is important for you to treat yourself to fun, recreational activities in the midst of hectic work demands. Simply giving yourself an hour a day to read a book or watch a television program can make all the difference.

The end of the year is an exciting but overwhelming time for small business owners. By taking the above steps, you can fight end-of-year fatigue, and make this a profitable season for your business.
