Maximizing summer holiday spending for your small business

People are typically in high spirits surrounding different holidays, especially fun summertime holidays like 4th of July and Labor Day. Families and friends may gather together and share meals and other festivities, some traveling by car or plane to be with others. As a small business owner, you want to make sure you have a strategy or plan in place for how your business ties into the different holidays in order to capitalize on increased customer spend.


Most popular, you see summer sales events, but there are plenty of other ways you can tap into the summer festivities to help boost your business. There’s opportunity to be creative, have a little fun and drive sales – even if your business doesn’t plan to be open on the actual holiday.

Treat your best customers.

If your business serves other businesses, you may decide that staying open is not the best option. In that case, according to USA Today, you can still harness the holiday spirit and take your best customers out to lunch or treat them to a baseball game or golf outing. You can do this on the actual holiday or immediately before or after the holiday if your invitees already have plans of their own. Showing appreciation is a great way to express your holiday spirit and can help strengthen your customer relationships, leading to higher revenue.

Have a holiday-inspired contest.

If you want to truly stand out from the crowd and tap into the holiday spirit, consider holding a holiday-inspired contest. Consider contests that tie into all-American summer eats – like a watermelon or hot dog eating contest. Invite staff and customers to dress up in their most patriotic gear and offer a store gift card to the customer that gets the most votes. Play music that is indicative of the lazy days of summer. Whatever you do, pick a theme that resonates with your business and the target customers you want to attract.

Use social media.

Use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media platforms to showcase how you intend to celebrate the holiday within your business. Make your posts fun and engaging by including holiday-themed photos, pictures, and brief videos whenever possible. Let people know you will be open. If you have a contest, promote it on social media. Start a few weeks in advance, so you allow time for word of mouth – online and offline – to spread. Ask your followers to share their own photos that align with your content theme for the holiday.


Display banners outside of your business that commemorate and celebrate the upcoming holiday. In-store and online, update your graphics on key messages and signage to tie in the celebratory holiday theme. Ideally, you want customers to feel immersed in the holiday in order to illicit an emotional response that encourages them to come in and spend money.

Provide a discount for the military.

If your business is located in an area with a number of military personnel or if you expect an influx for the holiday, consider offering a discount to anyone who presents a military or veteran id card. Make sure you promote this with messaging on your website, in your social media content, and in-store.

Help customers get a head start on their holiday shopping.

It’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping. Consider messaging that helps plant the holiday shopping seed for consumers – think “Christmas in July” type promotions and offers.
