How to manage stress while managing your business

Owning and managing a small business takes a lot. You are often more than just the boss. You are the bookkeeper, the janitor, the interior decorator and sometimes even a therapist. But when everything is seemingly on your shoulders and the foundation you built your livelihood on appears to give way, how do you manage stress and continue to manage your small business?

Know how to leave some things behind

Work-life balance may seem easy for some. They can simply clock out and leave their work worries at their office. But if you are running a small business, your office feels like it is always there. With that said, it is important to manage the challenges you choose to face each day to keep yourself from burning out. While it may seem necessary to put out all the fires at once, keep in mind that you may be less effective at what you do best if you stretch yourself too thin. To help yourself stay calm under pressure, prioritize your day and leave some action items for another time.

Seek support

The legend of the mythical small business owner who handles every obstacle without blinking an eye is far from a realistic one. You may find it difficult, but it is beneficial to ask for help and support when things seem dire. Perhaps you have friends who are business owners as well. Maybe your family can be counted on when you need to get something off your chest. The key is being able to reach out. How you choose to discover that helping hand is less important than finding it in the first place.

Stay healthy

One of the most critical reasons to manage stress as a small business owner is to maintain your health. Stress can possibly lead to many health issues or exacerbate ones you are already dealing with. Throughout the day, look for ways to give back to yourself and recharge mentally. You can go for short walks, meditate or even pick up a hobby that creates healthy space between you and your business. A small business owner who is mentally and physically healthy is better equipped for managing the day-to-day.

Be aware of your resources

If the cause of your stress is something you feel you have no control over, it may be best to assess the situation. Try to get a grasp on what is out of your hands by learning as much about the situation as you can. Lack of information can lead to your imagination filling in the blanks and creating more stress. Take the power of the unknown away by teaching yourself more about it.

In unprecedented times, stress is bound to occur. How you decide to manage it can make all the difference for a small business owner.
